Darwin Primate Group is offering volunteers a unique opportunity to live closely with orphan and injured primates. Why not make your next holiday something you will cherish for the rest of your life, the chance to share in the lives of Karin Saks and the orphan vervet monkeys currently living with her, and to assist in the conservation work she is doing in the Garden Route area in South Africa. On the one hand there has been some progress recently in that many previously listed ‘problem animals” (listed under our outdated Problem Animal Act) will be protected in accordance with the requirements of N.E.M.B.A - National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act. N.E.M.B act – 2004 - is a framework aiming for biodiversity in South Africa; the sustainable survival of botanical and zoological species in the ecosystem in conjunction with the fair and equitable utilisation thereof by humans. N.E.M.B.A requires provinces to present Biodiversity plans and redraft Conservation laws in accordance with their requirements which are expected to be implemented in 2007. While waiting for this compliance with NEMBA, the present laws are being applied one of them being the Hunting Proclamation responsible for supporting the decimation of much of our wildlife. The Darwin Primate Group seeks to raise awareness about the human/baboon conflict and human/monkey conflict in South Africa with the goal of finding constructive methods to protect these species from further damage caused by ongoing human development. Educating the public about co-existing harmoniously with the wild animals that share our territory is our first priority. Funding for this process is necessary to begin this project in a meaningful manner, to raise funding for further aims and to sustain this project for the future. Distributing pamphlets and newsletters, being available to speak to residents who choose to find peaceful ways to co-exist and to establish baboon walks to raise awareness would be our first step. Once we have that part of the project off the ground, we will continue with helping to establish wildlife monitor programmes where needed and will monitor the troops in the area to find out the extent of damage done to troop structures and populations, then work towards finding more methods to halt this.

The Vervet Monkey Rehabilitation Centre was established by Dawn and Rodney, a couple that have been working with monkeys for over 17 years. Besides monkeys, they also take care of ducks, geese, cats, dogs, and any other wildlife. Their home is Khobotho Ranch, situated deep within ‘Zulu’ country on a 3000 acre game reserve neighbouring a rural community where traditional Zulu huts are still the norm. This nature reserve is surrounded by a heavily wooded series of hills, cliffs and valleys mainly of virgin bush. The reserve includes a stone built, thatched bush camp that sleeps up to 12, where there are many species of wild animals to be seen. As a volunteer, you become a part of this big family, and you are required to assist with preparing feeds, hand-rearing infant monkeys (if and when necessary), feeding, cleaning and many other tasks in and around the centre. Jackal and caracal are very territorial. If the resident jackal or caracal are removed it leaves a void for others to fill. This is usually the young nomads. They will go for the easy target, sheep. It is important to have a balance and that balance is having resident animals on your property to protect it against the nomads.
It is also important not to shoot the wildlife that these predators survive on. If all other life has been eradicated then there is no option for these predators but to target your sheep. They have to survive too.
Karin Saks works with primates in The Crags and Nature’s Valley and have nursed many orphaned baboon and vervet babies in order to reintegrate them into the resident troops that form part of the area’s rich natural heritage of fauna and flora. She recently brought to our attention the existence of an electrical pylon in the village, which has been electrocuting animals and birds for more than two years. CXPRESS investigated.
Asendle means of the wild in Xhosa. An appropriate name for a website dedicated to improving understanding of so called 'problem' animals, highlighting the disappearance of others and reminding you, the audience, of their fragile existence.
